Falls from roofs remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction and maintenance work. Many of these incidents can be prevented through careful planning and the right safety measures. Planning Before Access
Before anyone steps onto a flat roof, there should be a clear plan for how the work will be carried out safely. This applies to new construction, maintenance, and inspections alike.
Start by assessing how often the roof will need to be accessed. Is it only for occasional service checks, or will there be regular visits to maintain HVAC units, solar panels, or drainage systems? The more frequent the access, the greater the need for permanent safety solutions.

- Access routes – How will workers safely get up and down? Fixed ladders, stairs, or roof hatches with internal access are safer than portable ladders.
